At the beginning of Fifth Avenue and next to the ferry to Cozumel, there is a small kiosque, a chapel and an esplanade with a huge sculpture, “the Mayan Portal”. You can buy fresh fruit from some street vendors, and enjoy the Papantla flyers show on the plaza

Several companies offer sea transportation to Cozumel Island. The crossing takes around 30 minutes.

Thanks to its peculiar popular flair, cosmopolitan atmosphere and privileged location on the Riviera Maya, half way between Cancun and Tulum, with a variety of attractions in the area, Playa del Carmen has become one of the most fascinating destinations in the Mexican Caribbean. Formerly known as Xaman-Há by ancient Maya, it used to be the departure point for the canoes taking pilgrims to the sanctuaries to the goddess Ixchel on Cozumel island.
