Located north of the main plaza in Izamal, it is one of the largest pyramids in Mexico. The mayan god Kinich Kakmó is a representation of the solar god Kinich Ahau.
The first construction stage dates from 400 to 600 d.C. The third stage was built from 950 to 1150 d.C, and a 100 meter base can still be seen.
He lived in Izamal around 1575 and was in charge of the construction of the convent.
The atrium of the convent is surrounded by 75 arches and a 7,806 sq. mt. esplanade. Fray Diego de Landa brought the image of the Virgin of the Inmaculate Conception, our Lady of Yucatán, to the convent.
Magic Town. Located 66 km from Mérida, Izamal was an important mayan city, as shown by its archaeological vestiges. During the colonial times, the conquistadors established the system of “encomiendas” from 1543 to 1549 and during the 16th century, they built the franciscan convent of San Antoniode Padua. Today, thanks to its numerous attractions, it has been declared one of Mexico´s Magic Town.
